14 Children and Pregnant Again Recap, Part 11 - "Joy, bankruptcy doesn't mean going to the bank!"

14 Children and Pregnant Again Recap, Part 11 -
We have taken a somewhat closer - and extremely unflattering - look at the big Duggar Master Schedule, and found out that it's mathematically impossible for the Duggars to spend lots of one-on-one quality time with their kids. Even though they don't have any walkmans (seriously, who had walkmans in 2004? Walkmans were SO out by then! CD's all the way!).
The comment section also was even more excellent than usual last time, providing important context and insight on the Duggar schedule. Michelle's strange obsession with post-its, for example, is not one of her quirks, but part of the Maxwell Family scheduling system. They're even more Fundie than the Duggars (ankle-length to the Duggars calf-length, if you get what I mean), and the parents, Teri and Steve her husband wrote a book called "Managers Of Their Homes" that is like a guilt-tripping Christian nightmare come to life, especially for people with varying energy levels like depressed or chronically ill people. Or maybe I just never scheduled "puke my brains out" the right way? Anyway, here's the introductory sample chapter on the wayback machine that made me want to skip breakfast, deep-clean my apartment because I suck so much and only housework can cure that, and then break down in a crying heap in my bedroom because it was too much. But that might be my specific trauma talking.
The mysterious QCH also probably stands for Quick Clean House, meaning that Jinger got about half as much schooling done as her siblings. I hope they changed those schedules around (as another snarker suggested). But my hopes aren't that high.
And now it's time to find out about even more systemic educational neglect and rape cult brainwashing... I mean the Duggar homeschooling system. Because "the children are around the house more than the average kids because home is also school."
Also... while I feel that the Duggars are already a walking, talking content warning for rape and sexual abuse, in addition to, you know, just about all other kinds of abuse, it's extra extra needed here. Proceed with caution. This is going to get real dark.
Michelle teaching. This is probably the most awkwardly staged attempt at portraying a classroom I've ever seen, and I've watched the Harry Potter movies.
Before we go any deeper, let's talk for a moment about what we see here. Because all those basic classroom observations I did when I studied education obviously need to be good for something, right? The children are all working intently - or at least pretending very hard to work intently (I have a feeling that Duggar kids get very good at looking very busy very young) - and that is all well and good. But Michelle is talking right now - she's trying to explain bankruptcy to Joy (and failing miserably). Across the fucking table. And I know that this is the most staged moment in the history of the School of the Dining Room Table that has ever been staged, and I bet it was a rare day when those kids actually all sat down and did schoolwork, but... if this - Michelle actively making schoolwork harder for her children - is what they WANT the world to see, what they think is the gold standard of schooling for their kids, then those kids never had a fucking chance. I stand by what I said in the last special - Michelle is in no way, shape or form qualified to teach a group of kids, much less one so diverse, one where she can't stand in front of them and tell them things and then maybe do some exercises like the standard lessons were when she was at school herself.
Michelle could take Joy to another room while the older kids worked quietly, to give her a one-on-one lesson. She could sit next to Joy and explain it to her, trying not to disturb the other children. She could do the sensible thing and work with Joy on fucking age-appropriate materials instead of bankruptcy, because the Wisdom Booklet said bankruptcy. She does none of those things, and instead talks over all of them. And do you know how well it's working? Look at that picture. It's working that well. Yes, that is Joy doodling on the back of her worksheet, during one of the afternoon "lessons in science, history, law and medicine" the "older" children get. Also, in case you have been wondering about the parental bonds the Duggar kids have with their mom, Michelle just said Joy's name and that - that right there - is her reaction. Not a muscle moved on that girl when she finally got attention from her mother (even though it's just for show), and damn, that's just fucking sad even for me, and my mom died when I was younger than Joy.
Joy is very interested in bankruptcy law. Not.
"And Joy, bankruptcy doesn't mean going to the bank, and you're at a bank. Bankruptcy is when somebody is really having a hard financial times [sic] and maybe they're not able to pay their bills..."
Many years ago, I was at a college party, and I was drunk. And my equally drunk friend needed help with exponential functions, and she asked me about them, and I went and very drunkenly explained exponential functions to her, right there at the party, because well, alcohol, and why the fuck not? Michelle sounds just about as coherent as drunk me explaining exponential functions and the number e, but about 300% less enthusiastic, because I'm like five-drink Amy when I'm drunk, and I like maths.
Even the special itself is faintly embarrassed by Michelle's abysmal teaching skills, and quickly cuts away from it, to a "cutesy" scene of the Duggar kids all playing the violin together. But not so fast, special. You're not getting away that easily. Because children can learn even with shitty teachers, if they have the right resources. So... what are the Duggars using? Right. They're using Wisdom Booklets. For those who aren't familiar with them, they're the ATI's (homeschooling branch of their cult) homeschooling resources, there's 54 of them, they're based on the Sermon on the Mount, and they tie lessons on science, history, law and medicine (seems familiar?) to specific bible verses. They're also the kind of pseudo-intellectual drivel that actively makes you lose IQ points the harder you try to understand them, because they're so ab-so-fucking-lutely mind-bogglingly stupid in addition to paedagogically, academically and morally bankrupt (ha, see what I did there?).
I, unfortunately, couldn't get my hands on Wisdom Booklet #35, the one they're using in this special, but the Wayback Machine is once again my friend, and has Wisdom Booklet #36 (And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.) available for our perusal. And... holy shit, that stuff is bad. So bad. SO FUCKING BAD. Please, go take a look, because I barely have the words for how bad it is. But have the recreational drug of your choice ready, because you're gonna lose brain cells, and you might as well make it fun. Important questions for all of the children - because yes, the wisdom booklets are supposed to be taught to all kids at the same time, Josh to Joy - to ponder and learn to answer through scripture study are... "How does our law distinguish between the evils of assault and battery?", "How do inherited traits affect the intensity of temptations?", "How does God use sand to help us comprehend the magnitude of forever?" and "How did prayers of a Godly general deliver him and his troops from certain death?"
Wisdom Booklet #36
And pardon my french, but HAVE THOSE MOTHERFUCKERS ACTUALLY LOST THEIR MOTHERFUCKING MINDS? In what kind of dystopian hellscape is THAT supposed to be a quality education? Are you shitting me? I went to Catholic school for eight years, guys, and if I'd gone and handed that... that fucking thing to one of my teachers, even the priest whom I saw out of habit ONCE in EIGHT YEARS, they'd pat me on the had and tell me I have a very active imagination, and wow, what a great creative writing exercise on religious nutjobs, because NOBODY WOULD EVER BELIEVE THAT SHIT. Like SERIOUSLY. What is WRONG with those FUCKERS?
Those texts... those resources... they read like some screenplay writer for a low-budget Canadian sci-fi series got told by his boss "Hey, Gus, I need some... uh... some science-y stuff, and some law-y stuff, and some linguistics-y stuff, and some history-y stuff would be nice too, go write us some resources. And it's for a crazy religious cult, so put some Jesus in it, too." And then Gus went, and Gus opened Wikipedia, and Gus read a bit, and then he got tired of research, because he doesn't get paid for research. And so he wrote some science-y stuff, some law-y stuff, some linguistics-y stuff, and some history-y stuff without having a fucking clue about science, law, linguistics and history. And when the show wasn't picked up, he called it a "Wisdom Booklet" and sold it to Bill Gothard as a joke, and the guy fell for it.
Example? Take pages 39-42. They're about math (and I picked them because, while I don't have a degree, I did go to university to become a math teacher for a couple of years). They're not only the worst, I repeat, the ab-so-fucking-lutely WORST resources on mathematics I have ever seen EVER (and I have made my own first worksheet, and looked at other fledgling teachers' first worksheets during "Baby Teachers Who Have No Idea About Didactics Make Their First Worksheets" courses). This "lesson" (I'm using the term loosely... very loosely) gallops through... what, at least eight years of mathematical education in FOUR FUCKING PAGES. And if that isn't bad enough, they're so full of FACTUALLY WRONG AND MISLEADING BULLSHIT that I want to scream my lungs out.
(this is saved as TheseFuckingMoronsAreJustFuckingStupidThatsNotAFuckingGraph.jpeg on my computer)
This is not only the most misleading, off-kilter (if it's more than a millimeter off, it's wrong, so THIS IS WRONG) coordinate system I have ever seen (and I have taught 12-year-olds how to draw their first coordinate system). Two of the three sentences under it also contain horrifically stupid mistakes that anyone with even a passing understanding of mathematics SHOULD NOT MAKE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. And those mistakes are wide-reaching and can fuck up any kid who wants to take college-level math courses. Because "I have no idea what a fucking function is" is one of the leading causes for crashing and burning in calculus classes.
So, let me just say, because it needs to be said because whoever wrote that pseudo-mathematical drivel didn't: Not every equation is a fucking function. If it's a circle it's not a fucking function (because if you can draw a line from top to bottom of the coordinate system and hit the same fucking line twice IT'S NOT A FUNCTION). And what you drew there CERTAINLY is not a function, you fucking breathing Dunning-Kruger graph, now go jerk off somewhere before you hurt more children with your blatantly stupid misinformation that could've been prevented if you were thinking less about Jesus and more about math, AS YOU SHOULD BE, you MOTHERFUCKER WITH A KJV BIBLE FOR BRAINS.
Okay. Deep breaths. I just needed to get that out of my system. Also apologies to any motherfuckers out there I might have offended during the course of this recap, you really don't deserve to be thrown into a pot with those rape cult assholes. Because this? The educational neglect? It's the not bad part of those books. I repeat. What you just saw is the not-bad part. Because we haven't even gotten to the brainwashing yet, and the part with the content warning for sexual assault. Because those books? They're not educational resources. Not even if you take the term in the loosest sense imaginable. They're cult brainwashing materials disguised as educational resources. I mean, what kind of girl doesn't want her parents to pay a lot of money for booklets that tell her it's her OWN FUCKING FAULT if she gets raped and doesn't scream? Dreamy and such a good, protective umbrella of authority, right? No, I'm unfortunately not kidding. Check it out on pages 45 and 46 (and please excuse me while I go puke behind some bushes).
The law of crying out
God has established some very strict guidelines of responsibility for a woman who is attacked. She is to cry out for help. The victim who fails to do this is equally guilty with the attacker. "If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die. ... and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not..." (Deuteronomy 22:22,24).
I'm sorry, there is no snazzy snarky caption for this.
Bill Gothard - the man whose organization published those Wisdom Booklets - sexually abused a lot of girls. Enough of them that Recovering Grace has a detailed graphic about his methods of isolation, abuse and gaslighting, in addition to the women's personal accounts (whose bravery and courage in coming forward can't be overstated). Part of Gothard's method is isolating his victims so that they can't "cry out" in any way, shape or form against the sexual abuse - and then, when they're cornered, trapped and vulnerable, he has years of brainwashing by Wisdom Booklets to fall back on that tell them it's their own fault, and that they have defrauded the most Godly of men (because Gothard is so fucking important to them that they even style their hair the way he likes it) by just... being women, so they won't come forward and tell everyone what a rapey, slimy, disgusting asshole he is.
This isn't about school, or learning. It's an abuser's brainwashing tool designed to make pretty young girls who are his "type" susceptible to his particular brand of abuse, and there's just enough learning sprinkled on top to make things look convincing. And it works. It teaches girls and women how to be abused, and it creates the predators who abuse them, at the same time. As we have seen with the Duggars. And it breaks my heart that those girls, who, at this point, have already been abused by their brother, are learning about "The Offended Must Initiate Reconciliation" (Wisdom Booklet #35) right now, and in about a month, they will be learning that they are equally culpable in their own sexual assault, and that they should have cried out, in a house where one of the house rules is "Never raise a voice to yell!"
This is what IBLP stands for. This is what the ATI teaches. They're not selling homeschooling materials They're selling materials for children and their mothers (because by telling mothers to home-school, you can indoctrinate everyone in one fell swoop) to be brainwashed into believing everything the cult says. And they're written just well enough that the average high school educated person can't instantly grasp what a big stinking pile of academically bankrupt BULLSHIT they are. Goddamn it. I want to crawl through the internet to bitch-slap people now. I'll invent time-travel too if I have to, just tell me who's responsible for it.
Up next: More home-schooling bullshit. Because we're not through with that, guys. There's so much more.

Which phonics curriculum materials did you choose and why?

I'm advising a couple of schools on what materials to buy for us to teach with. All of the systems seem lacking in different areas but I'm not familiar enough with all of them to make a good decision.
In general, these are just some of the problems I've found.
Letters and Sounds:
- A wealth of materials but it's aimed at native speakers, relying on kids knowing what things are from their pictures.
Book materials for the first stages have a a bit of a blind spot for the end of words in my opinion. I have to counter for this. The stickers are great but too expensive to use seriously IMHO. I prefer to have kids blending earlier.
I like the early rime and suffix support. Occasionally great for girls but It's all a bit childish for 5 year old boys addicted to video games...
Oxford Phonics:
Simply too much text on the page for younger kids. The approach is good and it would be great for adults but it's just too much on the page IMHO for kids younger than 9.
Looks good. Seems to mesh pretty fine with other systems but it's so commercial and I'm sure that'll cause problems at some points.
Floppy Phonics etc: Not sure. Trialling it.
This is my favourite since I can just try Letters and Sounds materials as I need rather than buy books and find they suck later on. However, even Twinkl has a lot of weak spots IMHO. Designed for natives. Weak on the end of words IMHO. Not enough stuff with vowels and too much focus on single letters IMHO. Interactive part is a bit weak. Personally, I also find it hard to navigate the website and find exactly what I want through searching alone since it's so massive.
I could do with a separate map to navigate phonics materials.
Now there's online and gamey stuff. This stuff seems to be quite separate to traditional books. It's good but I find it hard to bridge the gap sometimes between tech and non tech and stay organised.
Online game stuff:
I quite like PhonicsHero because of it's clear organisation. They're teacher friendly too and given a pro tech environment it could be the best we have now. I use it just for reference to be honest, without using the games so much. The schools here are very anti tech. The virus has changed this so maybe things are different now. Worksheets for anti tech parents, ipad for pro tech addicts. I suppose it can work. I use it in this way but it's inconsistent. Parents here just expect to have a book, not an app.
Other stuff like PhonicsBloom, Spellingcity, animphonics... helpful support but I don't find it systematic enough. No use of rime etc is a bit rubbish IMHO. Monsterphonics, again looks parent centric rather than aimed at teachers. For stuff that seems better, how do you integrate this into your class? (Graphogame, Phonics Hero, Nessy and Reading Doctor)
