[Full Review] [4.5 / 5 stars rating] Lenovo Legion 5i 17.3" 144 Hz 300 nits, Intel Core i7-10750H, and RTX 2060 (90 watts) [Lots of Pics]

[Full Review] [4.5 / 5 stars rating] Lenovo Legion 5i 17.3

Front View
Review Disclaimer:
  • I bought it with my own money, which includes Trump's stimulus $1,200 US Dollars check/deposit.
  • I will be comparing the Lenovo Legion 5i to another gaming laptop I had before this one with similar specs.
Lenovo Legion 5i specs:
  • 17.3” FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, anti-glare, 300 nits, 144Hz, 72% NTSC
  • Intel Core i7-10750H (6 cores)
  • 16 GB Samsung Ram in Dual Channel Mode (2x 8 GB)
  • 1 TB Western Digital NVME M.2 SSD
  • 1 TB Western Digital Black 7200 RPM HDD
  • NVIDIA RTX 2060 (90 watts)
  • 2x 2 watts side-firing speakers by Harman with Dolby Atmos support
  • White Backlit 1-zone keyboard
  • 80 Wh battery
  • Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX20
  • 4 years extended warranty
  • 30 day return
MSI GE75 Raider specs:
  • 17.3" FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS-Level 144Hz 3ms 100% sRGB 72%NTSC
  • Intel Core i7-10750H (6 cores)
  • 16 GB Ram in Dual Channel Mode
  • 512 GB Western Digital NVME M.2 SSD
  • 1 TB Seagate 5400 RPM HDD
  • NVIDIA RTX 2060 (115 Watts)
  • 2x 3 watts Giant Speakers and 2x Subwoofers by Dyna Audio with Nahmic support
  • Full RGB 4-zone keyboard with Steelseries
  • 51 Wh battery
  • Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX20
  • Since bought at Costco, 90-day return and 2 years warranty
  • I had to return it for a full refund because it had screen problems. I couldn't get an exchange because MSI gave it a $200 discount and cause everyone to buy it. I bought originally at $1399 then it sold out at $1199. I wanted to try a different laptop. Review: MSI GE75 Raider 10SE-008 - 17" 1080p 144 Hz, Intel Core i7-10750H, RTX 2060, 16 GB Ram, 512 GB NVME, and 1 TB 2.5" HDD from Costco
Why not buy a 7i instead of a 5i?
  • I am set on a 17.3" screen and only 5i has it. Out of all other available 17.3" customizable laptops, Lenovo is the only one where I can get a 17.3" 144 Hz 300 nits screen, 1 TB SSD, 1 TB HDD, RTX 2060, 80 Wh battery, and 4 years extended warranty for a grand total of $1,780.89 with sales tax. Everywhere else is $2,500 with sales tax.
Why I choose Lenovo Legion based on research and watching a lot YouTube videos.
  • I did extensive research to learn as much as possible about this product line.
  • All the ports are on the back: power, ethernet, 1x USB-C, 2x USB-A, and display out. This is the only laptop that has them all on the back. Clevo/Tongfang only have power and display out on the back. Other brands have power, display, and maybe 1x USB port on the back. I am the kind of person who likes to leave cables plugged in to easy access to transfer files to external drive or Android devices. I don't like having cables sticking out from the right side especially, since I'm right handed.
  • A balance between professional use and gaming.
  • Side firing speakers.
  • Big 80 Wh battery

====== Review ======
Chassis Plastic Material
  • It feels soft and smooth touch without visible finger prints. If the finger oils are very wet, you can definitely see them. It's very easy to wipe them away. If it's a light amount of finger oils, it's a little hard to see them.
  • The bottom of the laptop is a fingerprint and oil magnet.
MSI GE75: The black anodized metal case is a finger print and oil magnet, and it's not easy to clean off with only a cloth.

  • This requires a one finger to hold the chassis down and one hand to lift the screen up.
  • There's also this protective plastic film you can peel off on the hinge. Some people on YouTube peeled it off. I decided to leave it on because I don't think it's meant to be peeled off as there is no obvious pull tabs.
MSI GE75: The hinges are a lot tighter and requires two hands to open the screen.

Protective peel
Laptop Lid
  • Clean professional look. Legion logo doesn't have LEDs in it. It has a light rainbow effect. It has a metal Lenovo badge.
MSI GE75: It has a MSI dragon badge had a white LED that cannot be turned off. If I were to bring this into work, they would know it's a gaming laptop because of its gaming looks. It's going to bother people if you bring it to work or use it in a classroom.

Top view of the lid
  • The key caps have a non-slippery material. All the heat is mostly in the middle of the keyboard from T,G, and B keys to Backspace, Enter, and Shift keys. When my left hand gets sweaty, my finger tips don't slip off a key and press the wrong key.
  • Windows Key cannot be disabled, so you must rely on your game settings to disable it or using a 3rd party application to disable it.
MSI GE75: Left side where the WASD keys would get hot and caused my hand to get sweaty. The keys would become slippery. It also has a different material. MSI's Steelseries keyboard has a better macro software.

Keyboard temperatures after 3 hours of COD:MW on high using Performance Mode.
Backlit keyboard:
  • Three modes: Off, 50%, and 100% for one zone White. No special effects.
  • Every time you turn on the laptop, the backlit keyboard turns on for a few seconds, and then it automatically turns off. No need to go turn it off each time to turn on the laptop. If you turn off the laptop with the keyboard back light on, it will be on when you turn on your laptop again.
  • Fairly easy to turn it on with Fn + Backspace.
  • Sometimes the backlit keyboard gets bugged and refuses to turn on when I want to use it. This requires a reboot.
MSI GE75: You get RGB keyboard. If you turn off the RGB, it stays off permanently. When you press Fn, it also lights up all the Fn combo keys.
Function Keys:
  • This laptop has Fn keys for productivity and media keys.
  • If you don't use the F1 to F12 keys, you can turn on the Fn Lock (Fn+Esc), so you can easily press F12 to turn on the calculator or Home for Play/Pause.
MSI GE75: When you hold down Fn, it lights up all the Fn combo keys, but it was always a red LED and this color couldn't be changed. No media or productivity shortcuts.
Status LED's:
  • The Power button has the three different modes: Office (Blue), Balanced (White), and Performance (Red). I wish it was a little more dimmer. There's an easy fix for it. I just take the webcam please remove sticker and cover it. There is an on-screen notification when I switch between the three modes.
  • There's no flashing SSD or HDD LED indicator.
  • White Power LED is on the right side.
  • Charging LED is on the back side.
MSI GE75 has three white flashing LEDS on the front edge of the laptop, which I found to be annoying every time I would lean back on my chair. The power red LED was tiny.
Touch pad:
  • No dedicated left and right click buttons, but there is a click sound when you press it.
  • The palm rejection is a hit or miss, but I would turn the touch pad off if you're typing on something that doesn't auto save.
  • If you turn off the touch pad, it stays permanently off until you turn it back on. There's no need to turn it off with Fn+F10 each time you turn the laptop on.
  • Touch pad is a flat and smoother material than the chassis of the laptop. It's very hard to see your finger oils on it.
  • This is the first laptop I have used where it doesn't have the separate right and left click. The area where you I press to left click is substantially larger than the right click. Refer to this picture:
MSI GE75 has dedicated left and right click buttons. It can stay off too. It also has a red border on the track pad, which is meh.

  • I love how most of the ports are on the back of the laptop from left to right: Charge, HDMI, USB-A, USB-A, USB-C, Ethernet, and Lock. This makes your laptop set up look more clean. It also makes it less of a hassle to deal with stuff sticking out of the sides of the laptop. I feel this offers better ergonomics because I can have the mouse closer to the right side of the laptop.
  • I like how the added a dedicated BIOS button you can press to enter the BIOS, but you need to use a paper clip or SIM ejection tool to press it.
  • No Thunder bolt. I don't own anything that uses Thunder bolt, so it's not an issue for me.
  • No separate jacks for headphone and microphone; it's a combo jack.
  • Display port is connected to the RTX 2060, see Is the legion 5i's DisplayPort over type-C connected to the dedicated GPU?
MSI GE75: All the ports are on the sides of the laptop.

Left to Right: Charger, Sound Blaster Play 2 USB sound card, Logitech G502 mouse, and Ethernet cable.
SD Card Reader:
  • 17.3" screen model comes with a USB 3.0 memory card reader on the right side while the 15.6" does not come with one. Makes it easier to transfer files from micro-SD cards with the SD card adapter. No need to have an external memory card reader sticking out from the side.
MSI GE75 has a SD card reader, but it was USB 2.0 speeds. I end up having to use a external USB 3.0 memory card reader for faster transfers speeds.

Right Side of Laptop
  • Lenovo has a flatter AC charger.
  • The power connector can easily inserted and removed. It also doesn't matter which way you insert it.
MSI GE75 uses a barrel connector. It requires a little force to insert and remove it. The power brick is a typical not custom made one like Lenovo.

  • This laptop comes with a 80 wH battery. It can fast charge from 0% to 50% in 30 minutes. A full charge takes about 3-4 hours or so.
  • A lot of people asked if I can charge the laptop by using a USB-C charger. I tried it with an Anker phone charger, and it doesn't work.
  • While the laptop is off and unplugged, you can charge your other devices like a smartphone or tablet.
  • I got close to 7 hours on Office Mode doing internet via Ethernet, productivity, and watching YouTube.
  • There is a option in Lenovo Vantage to turn on/off the fast charge and keep the battery charged at 66% to prevent it from wearing out.
MSI GE75: The battery life was bad. I got about 2 hours maximum doing basic tasks. No fast charging. Dragon Center has the option to keep the battery charged at 60% too.
Webcam & Microphone:
  • It works. It also has a dedicated cover slide to block the camera. To turn off the microphone, you need to Fn+F4. You still have the option to do it by software too for both the webcam and microphone.
  • The cover slide covers the camera with a red dot, and the person who is watching you will see a black screen.
MSI GE75: To turn off the camera, you do it in Dragon Center. No physical slider.
Speakers & Sound: Dolby Atmos Application 14 images in a ZIP (1.14 MB)
  • Speakers are subjective. If you never had something that sounds better, these side firing speakers would be good enough for you.
  • To me, these speakers sound like trash. I am speaker person who prefers not to wear a headset/headphone. They sound the same like my Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 with the Dolby Atmos. The speakers sound good for an Android tablet. This 17.3" screen laptop shouldn't sound the same as my tablet because a laptop has more room internally to fit a subwoofer.
  • I was expecting good enough speakers for a gaming laptop because of the "audio by HARMAN" and "Dolby Atmos," but they aren't for me. Once you hear a speaker system setup that sounds really good, your ears adjust to them making everything else sound bad. The same applies to people who always use good headphone/headset.
MSI GE75: The Dyna Speakers with 2x Giant Speakers and 2x Subwoofers are the best. The music sounds fucking amazing. They are clear and loud despite being down firing speakers. The bass sounds authentic to point I had to put away my Logitech Z323 60 Watt 2.1 speakers because the laptop speakers killed the desktop speakers. It sounds like there is a concert in my room. MSI has set the bar really high for the best speakers on a gaming laptop.
  • This laptop was very hard to remove the bottom especially trying to separate the side vent areas from the chassis. I found I had to force the prying tool into the edge of the vent just to get my prying tool underneath it in order to separate it from the chassis. The first time it will always be hard.
  • There's a setting in the BIOS to temporarily turn off the battery to service the laptop while the battery is still plugged in. I recommend you unplug it anyway. It requires tweezers to push the tiny connector out.
  • Even though this is a 17.3" laptop with a wider chassis than the 15.6" laptop, you can only get to have a total of 2 storage drives.
    • 2x NVME M.2 SSD's
    • 1x NVME M.2 SSD with a 2.5" SSD/HDD
  • Tools required: Screw driver, tweezers, plastic prying tool, and plastic guitar pick.
  • No Factory Seal or Warranty Void sticker on the bottom of the laptop in the USA.
MSI GE75: Separating the bottom panel was very hard the first time, but it got easier over time. This laptop has room for 2x NVME M.2 SSD's and 1x 2.5" SSD or HDD. Total is 3 storage drives. Since the Giant speakers with subwoofers are at the bottom, it has a small battery. Tools required is a screw driver and plastic prying tool.

Lenovo Vantage application: 287 Pics in a ZIP (64 MB)
  • It's okay. There's not much you can do in it except turn laptop features on and off. There's a built-in hardware diagnostic scan to see if your laptop is working or not. There's no manual fan control. There are tutorials and more company marketing material.
  • It talks about the macro keys, but it's nowhere to be found in the software.
MSI GE75: The Dragon Control Center has has more features that caters to the gamer. It also has manual fan control except it's poorly implemented, but it's there. There's a lot of more stuff in this compared to the Lenovo Vantage.
  • Office and Balance mode is 99% of the time silent. The fans rarely ramp up. The only time when it ramps up is when I open 10 tabs all at once or bloody Window updates. It's safe to use this in a classroom, library, meeting, or workplace.
  • Performance mode for gaming, it's going to be loud anyway. You'll need a headset unless you plan on turning the speakers up to 60% or higher to play over the fan noise.
  • No coil whine whatsoever during Office and Balance mode.
MSI GE75: This laptop has a "silent" mode, but it's not really silent. It's more of a low fan noise. Sometimes the fans ramp up and creates coil whine. Since I have background noise like HVAC, it cancels out the coil whine. If it's dead silent, the coil whine is sometimes there when I use the Silent mode. Since the speakers were excellent, I didn't need to wear a headset when I'm gaming because the speakers on this laptop can overpower the fan noise.
Bios: 14 images (24 MB) in a ZIP
  • No advance bios for under volting or changing your ram speeds.
  • It's pretty basic with options to Enable or Disable.
  • Lenovo is aware of the backlit keyboard bug, and they are going to release a new BIOS update to fix it.
MSI GE75: I don't remember exactly, since I went in there once, but I remember seeing options to overclock your ram. I would assume MSI would allow you to under volt the CPU.
Thermal Performance (flat on the desk without a laptop stand)
  • This laptop has a 90 Watt RTX 2060.
  • There is a metal mesh dust filter attached to the inside of the bottom panel. I think if you remove this, it would dramatically improve the air intake for the fans. Update 8/1/2020: This mesh also holds a el cheapo dust filter (the kind you get in a cheap PC case) in place. This is stamped into the bottom panel and cannot be removed.
  • Without under volting, the CPU can hit 95C and GPU can hit 80C on Performance mode.
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on high settings with no motion blur and ray tracing turned off, I got between 80 to 110 fps.
  • In Just Cause 3 on ultra settings, I got 80 to 100 fps.
  • Killing Floor 2 on ultra settings: 80 to 90 fps.
  • With Turbo boost disabled, the CPU and GPU stays under 70C but the fan noise is still loud.
  • Playing on Office mode has no effect on the fan curve and will still be loud.
MSI GE75: I used the laptop as is without under volting and never crashed even though it was running very hot in the 90's C for both the CPU and GPU. This was before I learned about under volting.
COD: Modern Warfare: 100 to 130 FPS on high with motion blur off
Killing Floor 2: 100+ FPS on ultra with motion blur off
Fallout 76: 110 to 120 FPS on high
Just Cause 3: 100 to 120 fps on ultra

Same game with Turbo Off - CPU at 2.6 Ghz

Same game with Turbo Off - CPU Temp

Same game with Turbo Off - GPU Temp
  • 17.3" 144 Hz 300 nits anti-glare matte screen
  • It's good enough to be used indoors, but you can't see jack shit if you're outdoors unless you're in the shade. I mostly use it at around 40 to 60% brightness indoor.
  • Sometimes when I lift the screen up, the screen brightness doesn't instantly open to where I left it at. If I close the lid at 30%. When I lift the screen, it goes from like 20, 24, 26, and then 30%. It's weird. This tends to happens when I use low brightness.
  • Put the screen down 180 degree flat is a useless feature unless you stick your laptop in a vertical stand for better air flow.
  • I can also dim the display all the way down if I have the lights off and the screen won't be too bright at the lowest brightness level.
MSI GE75: 17.3" 144 Hz 3 ms with unknown nits. This screen is a lot brighter than the Lenovo's screen. I could only use it at 20 to 30% brightness indoors. Anything above 30% is too bright. I think it's probably a 400 or 500 nits screen.
  • When Lenovo shipped me the laptop, they used the original laptop's box. They didn't add another plain cardboard box to add more protection or to hide that it's a fucking laptop. It has the Lenovo Legion branding and laptop specs stickers on the outside of the box. I had this shipped to a UPS Store to pick it up.
  • My laptop screen has minor damage and 1 TB Western Digital Black 7200 RPM HDD is completely dead. I think someone got jealous and kicked or punched the side of the box or the box fell and hit the corner of another box. The force press in on the side of the box and caused the screen to press onto the Right Arrow and Zero Number Pad button area. This created a small patch of pink pixels that appears on any dark or black background starting at 60% brightness and becomes obvious at 80% brightness. There is no visible physical damage to the display itself.
  • Since the HDD got damaged, it was completely dead at the start. It caused the laptop to take about 45 seconds to boot up. I removed it and swapped it with a 2.5" Samsung 1 TB SSD. The laptop boots up in like 5 seconds.
  • The sytrofoam piece that holds the laptop in the box is designed for shock and drops. It offers limited protection against side impact especially on the side where the laptop screen will be at.
MSI GE75: This laptop was packaged inside another cardboard box, so you couldn't blatantly see it was a laptop. It could have been something else with batteries in it because the battery warning sticker. I don't remember if sytrofoam was used here. It was all cardboard on the inside. I had this shipped to Costco to pick it up from there.

Side impact on the box.

Screen at 80% brightness shows the small patch of pink pixels.
Freebies / free stuff:
  • Lenovo gives no extra freebies inside the box. You get the charger and usual paperwork.
MSI GE75 gives you a free keyboard size micro-fiber cloth to clean your screen and to place over the keyboard when your close your lid. In additional to this, there was also a free headset offer for writing a review, This one is controversial because it made it look like people were spamming fake 5-star reviews on Costco's website. On the other hand, MSI probably made a product that flopped and needed to get rid of the remaining inventory that no one wants to buy. It's a $50 USB-A gaming headset. Instead of trying to discount the headset, they decided to give it away for free for people who bought a specific laptop.
Final Thoughts:
The 5i product line can be confusing because there are different models with different configurations. Here is how I would break it down.
  • The Legion 5pi, which is the premium version of the 5i, is suppose to get a metal chassis (?), RGB keyboard with macros, and/or up to 500 nits screen depending on your customization.
  • The Legion 5i with 15.6" screen does not have a SD Card reader but has either a 60 Wh or 80 Wh battery. If you customize it, you get the option for the RGB keyboard with macros and 500 nits screen.
  • The Legion 5i with 17.3" screen has a USB 3.0 UHS-II SD Card reader with a bigger screen and 80 Wh battery. If you customize it, it costs more than the prebuilt laptops with the same specs? This one has no option for the RGB keyboard with macros and no 500 nits screen.
  • Prebuilt versus Customized? Prebuilt is cheaper and ships faster from the USA. Customized is better, but it can cost more for the same specs as a prebuilt and ships from China.
=== Conclusion ===
Overall, I rate this Lenovo Legion 5i with 17.3" screen and USB 3.0 SD card reader a 4.5 out of 5 stars. In order for it to be a perfect 5 out of 5 stars, it would need better packaging, a subwoofer, and macro support for the keyboard. Since the ports are on the back, I can plug in my USB Sound Blaster Play 2 sound card in the back and not have it interfere the sides of my laptop. This is a balance of half business and half gaming in a laptop. The performance is good but is not good enough compared to the other MSI GE75 Raider laptop. The MSI laptop is a full high performance gaming laptop with poor battery life. Then, again I could just use my Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 tablet as a work tablet, since it's lightweight and silent.
Due to the upcoming RTX 2060 115 Watts refresh and AMD CPU's, It's tough to decide whether I should keep the laptop or return it. I could always go back and get the Legion 5i or 7i with 17.3" screen, better GPU, macro support, and maybe an AMD CPU. The laptop speakers can easily be fixed with a USB Sound Blaster sound card with 2.1 desktop speakers. There's also the US vs. China issue too, so it might affect computer prices in the future.
Even though the newer laptops with AMD CPU and RTX 2060 have a starting base price as of $1,090 for 17.3" screen according to AMD announcement. I think it starts off at that price with a 128 GB SSD and 60 Hz screen. I think once you add the 144 Hz 300 nits screen ($70), 16 GB Ram ($50), 1 TB SSD ($200), 1 TB 2.5" HDD ($50) + 4 years extended warranty ($100) = $1,560. This is pretty close to my $1641 total. $81 difference. This is my guess.
Update 8/1/2020:
I returned the laptop to wait and see the new AMD Ryzen + RTX 2060 laptops.
I returned the laptop and now it's on its way back to North Carolina where it first came from. I found it was much easier to call the Legion Premium service phone to request a return for a full refund. They did offer me to refund in Lenovo Rewards points, but I declined that offer because the reward points can expire. I spent about 30 minutes on the phone to get a case number and the RMA request sent to me email. I print out the label, write the RMA # on the box, and drop it off at a UPS Store. I thought the process was easy. This is the first time in a long time I had to return something online directly to the manufacturer. I normally buy stuff at the retail store and return in person.
Update 8/13/2020:
They refund for the full amount I paid for is pending in my bank. It heard it will take the full 10 business days instead of the "up to 10 business days." I'll update one more time when I get the full amount.
5 days later, I got my full refund in my bank.
