Season series: Opening matchup of five for the Pacific Division rivals. Last season, the San Jose Sharks took two of three, one at SAP Center and a split at Scotiabank Saddledome. The previous year, the two teams split at each venue.
Big story: While the Sharks sprinting start is the talk of the NHL, the Calgary Flames haven't exactly stalled out of the gate themselves, earning points in all but one game. The Pacific Division, though, is running true to form, the top six teams separated by just five points.
Team Scope
Flames: One player who certainly has broken out from the crowd is 2013 first-round pick Sean Monahan. The No. 6 selection leads the Flames with four goals, scored in four successive games, his ice time is climbing and he's becoming more and more of a go-to guy offensively.
Only problem is the 19-year-old is getting closer to his ninth game of the season, after which the Flames will have to decide whether to keep him on the roster or send him back down to the Ottawa 67's not only for more seasoning, but also to keep his entry-level contract from kicking in, which happens if he plays in a 10th game.
"He's a monster player," coach Bob Hartley said after Monahan scored the game-winner in the Flames' 3-2 win over the Devils last Friday. "He knows where to get open, plus every time I saw him with the puck, it seems to find the back of the net. You call this a gifted player. He has that touch. He's a very special young player for us."
Sharks: They weren't going to go 82-0-0. That doesn't mean the Sharks walked away from their 4-3 shootout loss to the Dallas Stars on Thursday with any satisfaction. Quite the opposite, as visiting San Jose blew three leads to the home team.
"It's tough, especially when you score a goal and they come back and score on the next shift," center Joe Thornton said. "Those are the ones you want to bear down and make sure they don't score. Just try to continue the momentum and we didn't do that twice. So, we'll address it and be better in that aspect."
"We're disappointed we didn't get the two points. We probably didn't play well enough," coach Todd McLellan said. "We weren't as crisp and as fast as we have been earlier. You've got to give [the Stars] full marks. They played a fast, hard game."
Who's hot: Monahan may be grabbing the headlines, but Flames forward Jiri Hudler has been setting the pace offensively, leading the team with eight points and picking up at least one in every game so far. … Sharks rookie sensation Tomas Hertl continues to lead the NHL with seven goals, while he, Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture are among the League leaders with nine points apiece. Goalie Antti Niemi shares the League lead in wins with Marc-Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh Penguins -- each has six.

Tonight's game will be the second straight road game for the Wild, having first traveled to Montréal and beating a hapless and exceedingly injury-maligned Canadiens club 4-1. The Wild showed some offensive life last time out, where those watching bore witnesses to Minnesota Hockey's version of a unicorn – Mikael Granlund bagging two goals in the same night. To be fair, Montréal's starting roster featured only 8 total players from their opening night NHL roster, and currently have over $35 million in this years salary out with injuries.
The Wild continue their impressive performances on the road, especially with the powerplay banging yet another goal on the road. Playing against an Ottawa team that has given up a league-high average of 33.3 shots per game as well as the forth highest goals against (3.03) per game might be just enough of an elixir for the Wild to continue their recent offensive production.
In roster news, the team practiced yesterday in Ottawa, with head coach John Torchetti not announcing any line changes from his roster in Montréal. Considering the line pairing in practice yesterday, it does appear that Jason Zucker, Chris Porter, and Mike Reilly are up in the press box again for the second straight night. Pominville, whose strained leg muscle injury has kept him out the last two games looks likely to keep him out for a few more. He's a no-go for tonight, with Thursday's game in New Jersey appears doubtful as well, as per multiple sources close to the team.
The playoff picture in the Western Conference is tightening up, and shows no signs of being any clearer until the season's end. Both Minnesota and Colorado are tied at 74 points each for the 8th and final playoff spot – with Minnesota holding a game in hand. Minnesota controls its own destiny, but only by the slimmest of slim margins. Nashville's recent pace has pretty much assured them the 7th position in the West, while both Phoenix and Vancouver appear to be circling the drain. The two-team race for the last playoff spot is on, and while Minnesota holds the advantage with the game in hand, the March 26th game against the Avalanche looks to be one of the most important regular season match-ups in several years – with implications for both teams.
