Silver Eyes || Finding the Right Penalty

DISCLAIMER:
This post was originally intended to be a comment to u/RedditDann's post 'Silver Eyes' are unnecessary in RWBY, in which he comes up with blindness as the fallout for using silver eyes. The intended comment was meant to discuss why blindness wasn't such a good idea, among other relevant topics.
It has been formatted into a post instead, for greater length and wider visibility.
———

Introduction

As it stands, silver eyes offer very few narrative repercussions—which is to say, they don't ripple through the story to affect the main story arc or the main character's development in permanent or indispensable ways.
We often say we need to give silver eyes a penalty, but even giving silver eyes a drawback like blindness isn't enough to create the narrative weight needed to produce narrative repercussions. Usually, when you establish something as having a downside, the best literary payoff possible is turning that downside into a Chekhov's Gun which obeys Murphy's Law. In other words, "anything that can go wrong, will go wrong."
What I mean is this. Even saying something "could" happen isn't enough to realize your story to its fullest potential until you explore when that something "does" happen. If you can't make a "could be" into a "will be," don't include the "could be." If we say Ruby could become blind if she overuses her silver eyes, okay, then what? Will she lose her eyesight eventually? Probably not, obviously. Then what's the point of having that be the penalty? The point is, using a penalty like blindness creates arbitrary and ambiguous consequences. It's also distant to having any real effects on the story progression, unless say, Ruby chickens out when she was supposed to use her eyes and regrets it later, which is a weak trait and antithesis to her character. Having such a slow burn when it comes to reminding the audience of these types of consequences that will never come to pass is not easily translated into a powerful story beat or scene. Also, it'd get repetitive quickly, and soon feel like artificial drama for the sake of adding tension to a string that has no ends tied.
There's an easy way to both add a penalty and have the effects of that penalty be explored, without upsetting what you want to happen in the story too much. The easy way is this: choose a better penalty. There's also a hard way: choose the perfect penalty that will form the backbone of your story all throughout its acts.

Examples from Other Works

Before I get on with my suggestion for RWBY, I want to talk about two of some of my favorite shows, and how they handled superpowered trump cards with fatal weaknesses. You might have heard of them. They are Avatar: The Last Airbender and My Hero Academia.
Avatar: The Last Airbender
In ATLA, the Avatar has an ability called the "Avatar State" in which all the energy of all the past avatars is combined and focused through the body of the current Avatar. And frankly, it's OP. If Aang, the last airbending Avatar had only figured out how to control his ability, he could have taken out the Firelord in episode one. But the Avatar State has one huge disadvantage: if Aang is killed while in the Avatar State, the Avatar cycle of reincarnation will be broken forever, and the world will lose its only protector of peace and balance. That's a pretty big threat, huh? Normally, people would assume that the main character could never die, and would feel perfectly safe while watching Aang fight in otherwise life-threatening situations. Well, spoiler warning out of the way, that expectation was soundly subverted in the climactic final battle of Book 2, when Azula, the daughter of the Firelord, struck Aang with lightning while he was in the Avatar State, and the Fire nation finally claimed the great Earth kingdom stronghold of Ba Sing Se.
But it wouldn't be called the Last Airbender if Aang stayed dead for long, so Katara used her water bending healing powers and some spiritual oasis water voodoo to bring Aang back to life. What I love about ATLA's usage of this trope is that what I've said so far would be good enough, in and of itself. You have good establishment, good setup, good payoff, and the tone and mood are all right. But the writers of the show decided to take it one step further and used Aang's "death" as the setup for the first half of Book 3, allowing Team Avatar to explore and flesh out the people and places of the Fire nation while including a bunch of undercover shenanigans, and as the strategic surprise culminating in the invasion of the Royal city. Not only that, but they used Aang's supposed death to develop Aang's rival and deuteragonist, Zuko, the prince of the Fire nation, in perhaps the best redemption arc for a character in animation history. That's what makes the inclusion of this penalty so effective to the writing and story and characters of this show. That's why ATLA will and always will be my favorite show of all time.
My Hero Academia
But enough fanboying. Let's get on to MHA. What I'm so satisfied with about MHA is the fact that it's still ongoing, so I don't know if the worst penalties of the quirk One For All will ever be fully explored, but I don't really mind because in many ways the very real threat of using it too much are already impacting the story and its main character (and his mentor and his rival) in very dynamic and organic ways. Izuku Midorya—the protagonist of MHA—trains a heck of a lot and gets a pretty ripped body, but he's still too weak to handle the awesome power that is One For All. Because of that, he can't help but damage more areas of his body more and more every time he uses it. What I love about MHA is that every battle with Midorya is different, because he is constantly coming up with new ways to use his quirk effectively, and it shows his inner strength and firm resolve when he grits his teeth through the pain and pushes himself beyond his own limits. Even though the more extreme disadvantages like Midorya's arms becoming paralyzed won't ever happen, you can't deny how well both the upsides and downsides of his power shape the undulations of this story from beginning to end. And that's all I'll say about MHA because I'm just an anime only.

Why Silver Eyes Have No Repercussions

Anyways, back to RWBY. The reason I dislike silver eyes is because it serves no narrative significance. It's there to fill a gap, but it's honestly like fitting a square block in a round hole. It doesn't impact the plot, it doesn't impact the development of the main character. Sometimes it's a little all-consuming, with the show often treating it like it's Ruby's one and only character trait at times, all the while Ruby never reflects properly on why she needs to master it. It's like a side quest to the main story quests, though one I wish was optional. RWBY juggles its focus a lot of the time on the nearest thing that's next to cross off on the list, so everything including the development of this superpower suffers. Literally, removing it would change so little, I'll explain right now how little things it would change.
First is the earliest time Ruby ever uses her eyes: against the dragon Grimm above Beacon and on Cinder which leads to her scar. As for Cinder, she forgets her grudge against Ruby even when the girl's standing right in front of her, and her shame at being disfigured and any possible hints of character development are totally overlooked as soon as she gets her voice back, so the scar is really there just to make her look cooler. And the dragon Grimm? That thing joins at the last possible second, with no foreshadowing or cues that it ever existed, and it seriously doesn't even do a thing before it gets turned to stone; so that thing is just for looks too. You could easily make it so that Ruby simply sees Pyrrha die, and then Qrow swoops in to rescue Ruby. You could even stretch out this interaction into a full-blown test of wills that's even better than Ruby's annoying insistence on joining Qrow's fight against Tyrian in V4. Just make Ruby want to stay and avenge the death of her friend, and have Qrow demand she run away, all as they dodge attacks from Cinder, until right before a fatal blow, Qrow puts his foot down, grabs Ruby in time, and makes a break for it. Or if that's not good enough to transition to Ruby's waking-up-in-bed scene and we don't want to change that, fabricate some other reason why Ruby loses consciousness.
Then we get Ruby's short flash in the V5 fight which does practically nothing to advance anyone or anything in terms of the story other than for the writers to show that they haven't forgotten Ruby has eyes that are silver. Removing it from the fight would do nothing. Just have someone else stop Cinder and Jaune from charging at one another.
Then we have the Brunswick farms scene in which Maria retcons how Ruby's eyes historically were supposed to activate in the past, so that Ruby could save the team from random fodder Grimm of the week #42 (if you adamantly reject my summation of this scene by insisting that you thought it was stellar for this show, I will pull no punches in saying I view you the same as a child in a Walmart who won't give up his new Lego). Humor and demeaning remarks aside, you could easily move Weiss' fire tactic up a little, invent a little desperation scene followed by an oh-so-satisfying realization moment of a clever way out, then follow through with burning everything to the ground. Then you don't even need Maria.
And finally is the scene at the end of V6 when Ruby nukes the kaiju Grimm (which ends up killing no one in Argus, despite how seriously this show wants us to think of the Grimm invasion as a disaster for its townspeople. Literally, the Grimm are less of a threat than inclement weather). And before you say you liked the matte paintings of flashbacks from previous volumes, Ruby's clever use of Jinn's ZA WARUDO, and Summer's reveal—allow me to explain it this way: all of those things ultimately mean nothing to the fight and Ruby's efforts are worthless because Cordovin's mech used it's Giga Drill Breaker to finish off the kaiju Grimm fifty times faster than any filler Grimm, and almost as fast as Coco took care of that Nevermore. Who's to say Cordovin couldn't have taken out the kaiju Grimm in a fair fight? There isn't even any indication that our heroes bought Cordovin time or created a window of opportunity. Cordovin just walks up an arbitrary duration later (should it really take that long to disengage a robot arm?), holds up her drill like she's grabbing a book from a tall shelf, and rips the Grimm to pieces. If the show pulls this bait-and-switch again, silver eyes will be redundant. I get the impression the show is only succeeding at milking the audience's feelings with Ruby's silver eyes scene, because it's sandwiched between numerous invitations of shock value with the useless things the show tries to pull. Jinn's time-stop powers for example had no story reason to exist, absolutely zero relevance, and no lasting consequences, cause it was just "another thing that seemed cool" and filled space. Summer's reveal is completely pulled out of the show's cheeks because I find it very hard to believe Ruby actually cares about her mother as much as Yang finally doesn't about hers, given how little onscreen time is spent with Ruby giving a damn about Summer, compared to Yang with her own mom. My point is, there are a million better ways of writing the story that don't involve stupid looking kaiju Grimms and stupid looking mechs, and a better scenario to show this character's growth than facing inept Godzilla while imagining the many motherly things her mom did for her, the same as we have to imagine them too because they're never shown ever.
Phew... Really went all out on the show there, didn't I? Maybe I'll tone it down now.
Now I know these solutions aren't all the most flashy or interesting, but you know what? That wasn't the point. The point was to show how easily you could surgically cut out all the instances of silver eyes, patch up the seams, and change practically nothing.
———

The Perfect Penalty

Anyways, now for the moment you've all been waiting for.
My suggestion for giving silver eyes the exact right penalty is this:
  • Make the user fall unconscious for an indeterminate amount of time.
This is perfect, and actually agrees in some ways with previous canon. The first time Ruby uses her eyes against the dragon Grimm she doesn't wake up for days.
I could envision a scenario where:
  • Ruby and co. find a traveling family on their journey to Mistral with some sentimental tale of hope, and the tone post-V3 gets a little brighter.
  • The good times don't last when they all get into trouble with Grimm.
  • Ruby involuntarily uses her eyes because her desire to protect people is so great. She destroys some big boss Grimm, but then falls unconscious.
  • When Ruby wakes up again, she is in a new location, JNR are around her, the family is missing, and a few days have passed.
  • A confused Ruby asks what happened to the family, and all the members of JNR look very grave as they swallow back the lumps in their throats to explain to Ruby how several more Grimm snuck up behind them after she used her eyes and ended up killing the family.
  • If we wanted, we could even make it so that JNR tell a lie to Ruby to save her feelings—they tell her the family decided to safely part ways in a nearby village, and the audience would be in the same position Ruby is in, taking their words for it. Then when the truth is revealed through physical evidence of some kind, the realization will hit that much harder.
It would add such a dark reality to the show, especially compounding on the V3 finale, and service a reminder to Ruby of the strategic advantages and disadvantages of using her eyes to cut a battle short. It also gives Maria a new purpose: teaching Ruby the skill to apportion her silver eye bursts in order to stay conscious during battle, or put less juice into sustained exposures. This makes silver eyes more of a mana bar in fights, that have to be used in the exact right ways, at the exact right moments, with the exact right strategies, rather than a one-shot catchall. You could then have moments where Ruby is on the losing edge of battles, where she struggles to keep her mind sharp and stay awake. All of this implies that the Grimm should be a lot stronger than current canon, and should honestly be as dangerous as—say—Titans in Attack on Titan, or even half as good as that. But what's fair is fair is that the fights involving silver eyes will be that much more entertaining.
———

Closing Remarks

So what do you think of this idea? I'm pretty satisfied with it. And given my familiarity with those other two shows I mentioned, I'd say this one has tons of potential to emulate the writing strengths of MHA's One For All. The two are very similar in many respects. You could really do a lot with this. What other themes do you think the show could demonstrate using this idea, and where else do you think it could take Ruby's character? I'm interested in hearing everyone's thoughts below!
EDIT: I made some much needed clarifications in a comment below.

MAME 0.222

MAME 0.222

MAME 0.222, the product of our May/June development cycle, is ready today, and it’s a very exciting release. There are lots of bug fixes, including some long-standing issues with classics like Bosconian and Gaplus, and missing pan/zoom effects in games on Seta hardware. Two more Nintendo LCD games are supported: the Panorama Screen version of Popeye, and the two-player Donkey Kong 3 Micro Vs. System. New versions of supported games include a review copy of DonPachi that allows the game to be paused for photography, and a version of the adult Qix game Gals Panic for the Taiwanese market.
Other advancements on the arcade side include audio circuitry emulation for 280-ZZZAP, and protection microcontroller emulation for Kick and Run and Captain Silver.
The GRiD Compass series were possibly the first rugged computers in the clamshell form factor, possibly best known for their use on NASA space shuttle missions in the 1980s. The initial model, the Compass 1101, is now usable in MAME. There are lots of improvements to the Tandy Color Computer drivers in this release, with better cartridge support being a theme. Acorn BBC series drivers now support Solidisk file system ROMs. Writing to IMD floppy images (popular for CP/M computers) is now supported, and a critical bug affecting writes to HFE disk images has been fixed. Software list additions include a collection of CDs for the SGI MIPS workstations.
There are several updates to Apple II emulation this month, including support for several accelerators, a new IWM floppy controller core, and support for using two memory cards simultaneously on the CFFA2. As usual, we’ve added the latest original software dumps and clean cracks to the software lists, including lots of educational titles.
Finally, the memory system has been optimised, yielding performance improvements in all emulated systems, you no longer need to avoid non-ASCII characters in paths when using the chdman tool, and jedutil supports more devices.
There were too many HyperScan RFID cards added to the software list to itemise them all here. You can read about all the updates in the whatsnew.txt file, or get the source and 64-bit Windows binary packages from the download page.
