Axle shafts were stuck in pretty good, so I used some hydraulics to pop them out. I saw a guy do this on youtube with just a slide hammer. Didn't work for me. https://i.imgur.com/xDPmbyZ.jpg

These Xterras must have brittle spider gears, as everyone complains about these axles eventually making noise. I'm willing to bet it's like this with everyone's Xterra that has a crappy open diff, and I don't think it's due to a clogged breather. https://i.imgur.com/i9c9XiS.jpg
These M226 axles have threaded adjusters, and it helps if you have a threaded adjuster tool to remove them; plus, you can use the tool to run cloth through the axle shaft, and clean them out like a gun barrel. Just a thought about how much I like this axle instead of one that would be on a chevy, that you would have to use shims for. That would be frustrating as hell to have to deal with.

Pressing off the old bearing with a bearing spliter, and 20 ton press.
Come along attached to bearing puller to hold it in place and pull while I hit it from the other side to remove the race.
The old Timken bearings and races actually held up pretty good even though there was a lot of metal debris in the axle from the broken spider gears. I replaced them all with new timken bearings as well.
Magnets are your friend when cleaning up the mess.
Time to drive in new pinion races.
Needed to make a quick tool to hold the pinion collar in place so I grabbed some scrap metal and drilled some holes on my mill. Yeah, I'm kind of messy, need to do some cleaning.
Put the new pinion nut on as far as I could with the impact wrench but it wasn't powerful enough to crush the crush ring. That took a bit more work as you'll see.
Needed to get some leverage on a 1/2 inch ratchet for a hydraulic pulling ram to attach to, so off to the welding table to weld in an anchor bolt into the cheap harbor freight ratchet. https://i.imgur.com/mXtxCm0.jpg

This makes crushing the pinion crush ring super easy considering I didn't have much room to work under the xterra, and you need at least 200 footpounds of force to crush the crush ring. https://i.imgur.com/eZKtFIE.jpg

I cut the old bearings and races off the axle shafts, and now I'm using the heat gun trick to drop on the new bearings without having to press them.
After heating the bearing to about 175 degrees, it just falls right into place. Did the same trick on the pinion with it's bearing. Doesn't work with the metal ring that goes over top of the bearing though, as that fits much tighter.
You'll need a press for the ring that is above the wheel bearing. That sucker is really on there. These Nissan axles are so much better made than other axles that are just held in with a clip.

I can't believe that people are thinking that these breathers are getting clogged up from just normal use. Look at that hole through it, it's huge. The person who owned my Xterra before me drove it without changing the diff oil, and I got it at about 125k miles with a noisy diff. The problem is that these Nissan's have brittle spider gears that go out, probably because of lack of the oil change or it could be that they just suck. Anyway, get rid of that open diff, and get yourself a truetrac or locker.
Did the breather mod like everyone else using the existing fitting without it's cap.
Ran the hose up into the body through a rubber grommet.
She's a dirty girl with dents and dings but I like her. I took her to a place where I normally have to put her in four wheel drive to get out, and she came out of that place just fine in two wheel drive now. The truetrac diff made all the difference.
